Oksana Averkova was born on August 12, 1970. She trained under
Maslennikova, Elena Zamolodchikova's personal coach. Averkova competed well in
the few international assignments she received. In 1985 she placed third AA at
the 1985 Moscow News, and claimed gold on bars. These results came just in
time. Discouraged by her progress, World Gymnastics magazine
reported that Averkova had toyed with retirement earlier that year. Tatiana
Bunina, then director of Averkova's club, the October Sports School, persuaded
her to press on.
Averkova improved
over the next year, winning the 1986 Moscow News and capturing gold on bars
and beam. "I wish very much that this tournament would become a lucky talisman for me. I strove to perform evenly, without any slips, and in all the events was successful,"
Averkova told the Russian press.
Averkova did enjoy some continued success. She traveled to Belgium for the 1986 Belgian Gym Masters, returning
home with an assortment of gold and silver medals (2nd AA, 1st V, 2nd UB, 1st
BB, 2nd FX). She also traveled overseas for the 1986 USA vs USSR dual meet,
contributing to her team's victory and placing 6th AA individually.
According to IG,
Averkova continues to live in Moscow. She is a full-time mother.
