Olga Chudina was a beautiful gymnast with a flair for classical
routines. Unfortunately, the gymnastics world saw far too little
of this gymnast. Riddled with repeated ankle injuries, Olga was
routinely denied the opportunity to prove herself. For example,
at the 1987 Champions All meet she competed with a broken ankle
(!), hence her watered down FX and poor overall standing.
The one time it truly mattered, at
the 1988 USSR Cup - the competition used to determine the 1988
Soviet Olympic team - Chudina pulled it together, finishing 5th
ahead of Strazheva, Baitova and
Omelianchik. Unfortunately,
politics prevailed and Chudine found herself off the team.
Instead, Strazheva and Baitova competed in the Seoul Olympics and
Omelianchik served as the alternate.
Chudina retired from elite
gymnastics and moved to New York to pursue a modeling career. Now
a successful sports model, Chudina has turned her attention back
to the gym - she currently coaches and choreographs floor
routines for World Cup Gymnastics in Chappaqua, NY. In her spare
time, she performs for ANTIGRAVITY, the dance troupe that once employed Svetlana Boguinskaia.
Update! (October 2002). In Miami this past summer, Olga married Sergey Malakhov, a girl's gymnastics coach for the Darien YMCA Gymnastics Club. Also coaching alongside
are Ukrainian couple Vladimir and Valentina Kovalenko.
Chudina was born on July 12, 1971.
