Sylvia was born June 27, 1961 in Sebnitz. She started training in Dresden, but after her victory on beam at the 1975 Spartakiade she switched to SC Leipzig to train under Helmut Gerschau. Her best
apparatus was the floor exercise, which she won at the GDR junior national championships in 1976 and senior national championships in 1978.
Sylvia was an integral part of East Germany's bronze medal teams at the 1978 and 1979 World Championships, and 1980 Olympics. Individually, one of her best results came at the 1978 World Cup, where
she finished second AA and made floor finals.
After her gymnastics career she started coaching at SC Leipzig, but is now a psychotherapist. Her son,
Sven
Hafemeister, competed at the European Championships in wrestling and is
currently on the wrestling team at Columbia University.
