Ivona Krmelova (TCH)
Ivona Krmelova was born on October 29, 1969 in Bohumin, Czechoslovakia (now the
Czech Republic). At age 12 she competed in her major international, a friendship
cup of sorts. She improved on her fifth place finish at the following gathering of this meet, in 1983, where she placed fourth
all-around. That same year she became the Czechoslovakian junior national
champion. 
Over the next three years, Iva rose
to the ranks of senior national champion. She went on to compete at several
international meets, e.g., 1988 Blume Memorial - 10th AA, 1988 Cottbus Cup -
11th AA, and, most significantly, the 1988 Olympics (7th team). Following Seoul
she enrolled at the Sports Institute of Charles University in Prague. She
graduated in 1993 and began formal judging and coaching.
Iva spent a few years coaching in
her hometown before emigrating to the USA with her husband, fellow gymnast Pavel
(Paul) Lakomy. Her original coaching position was in Florida. Since August 1998,
she and her husband have been coaching at Sunburst
Gymnastics Training Center in Union, New Jersey. Their son, Jacob, was born June 5, 2001.
