SEPTEMBER 30 - SHEWFELT REP FOR RAISE-A-READER CAMPAIGN

Calgary's Kyle Shewfelt graces the cover of today's Calgary Herald, discussing the importance of reading. Shewfelt, a gold medallist at the recent 2004 Olympic Games, is this year's representation for the Calgary Herald's Raise-a-Reader campaign. The campaign raises funds for local literacy programs.

"Reader is what has inspired me all these years...it's kept my head together," Shewfelt told the Calgary Herald. "It has motivated me to keep training and working towards my goals." Shewfelt credits various motivational books for his positive mental edge, including Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey, In Pursuit of Excellence by Terry Orlick, and Body Mind Mastery by Dan Millman, a book he read at the pre-Olympic training camp in Spain.

National Championships

Canada's top juniors have a busy October ahead. The Junior Pan American Championships kick off October 12, in San Salvador, El Salvador. Team Canada is lead by two veterans of this year's Junior Pacific Alliance team, Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs (Sport Seneca) and Rebecca Simbhudas (now at Pulsar's). Joining them are Alyssa Brown (Mississauga) and Kelsey Hope (Gemini). Originally an alternate, Simbhudas stepped in with Aisha Gerber's recent withdrawal. New alternate Jennifer Lezeu (Cambridge Kips) will travel with the girls to a pre-meet training camp at the Karolyi Ranch, October 5 - 12, 2004. The training camp will also feature a friendly dual, between Canada and host USA. Joining the team in El Salvador are coaches Carol-Angela Orchard and Liuda Korolenko.

The Junior Pan American Games homecoming marks departure for a second team Canada, this group leaving for competition in England. WIMGYM's Dawn Petulli joins three athletes from Sport Seneca for the October 23-24 competition, senior Ellen McCarthy and juniors Leslie Mak and Nicole Heikkeila. Seneca coach Lisa Cowan is also making the trip.
