Nansy Damianova of Club Gymnix in Montreal is one of Canada's most promising gymnasts. Born in Paris of Bulgarian parents (who were both athletes), Damianova has steadily moved up the rankings of Canadian gymnastics, finishing tie for 11th place as a novice at her first Canadian Championships in 2002 and moving up to sixth the following year. She moved up to the junior ranks in 2003-2004, earning her first international assignments in the process (2004 Friendship Classic and Trophee Massilia) as well as a tenth place finish at the 2004 Canadian Championships.
Damianova showed steady improvement in 2005, finishing second at the International Gymnix meet and third at the Canadian Champoinships. She traveled to Japan later that year for the prestigious Japan Junior International invitational where she made vault finals and finished 10th in the all-around. That same year she also represented Canada at the Stella Zakharova Cup in Ukraine and again at the Trophee Massilia in France. Though still junior aged internationally, she made her senior debut that December at Elite Canada, finishing fifth and taking first place in the vault event finals.
2006 has been a very successful year for Damianova so far. At the Pacific Alliance Championshpis in Hawaii she led the Canadian junior team to a silver medal and individually ranked sixth all-around and earned a bronze medal on vault in the apparatus finals. At the Canadian championships, her first as a senior, she finished third in the all-around and won medals in all four apparatus finals, including gold on the vault and uneven bars. Although she is too young to compete at the world championships this year, she has her sites set on the 2007 worlds and 2008 Olympics, where she has an excellent chance to be a strong contributor to team Canada.
Damianova has clean execution and good difficulty on each event and her difficulty has increased steadily throughout the last two years. On vault she shows a Yurchenko 1 ½. On the uneven bars she performs a toe-on Shaposhnikova to overshoot handstand, a toe-on full Tkatchev combination and a double front dismount. A round-off to two footed layout highlights her beam routine and on floor she tumbles an Arabian double front, piked full-in, and double pike.
