Lisa at'01 Spring Cup

Lisa Pattison, born March 27 1988, was a surprise junior all-around winner at the 2000 Elite Canada competition in Winnipeg. Coached by Chris Baraniuk and Rebecca Pion at the Marian Gymnastics Club, Pattison had a very successful novice career, highlighted by a second place AA finish at the 2000 Canadian championships in the Novice High Performance category - moving up from 29th as a national novice competitor the previous year. She was also the top Canadian competitor in the novice category at the 2000 Bluewater International, finishing 2nd - and charming the audience with a delightfully executed floor routine.

Pattison made a successful jump into the junior ranks at the 2000 Elite Canada competition, helped out largely by a combined start value of 20.0 on the balance beam (under Canadian models scoring). Finishing second on both days of the all-around competition at Elite Canada 2000, consistency prevailed, giving her her first national AA title.

Pattison entered the 2001 season as one of the favourites for the junior national title. At the Canadian championships in Newfoundland, she performed well and finished 6th in the all-around and 1st in the balance beam.

Pattison had hoped to make her international debut in Japan last fall, but the tragic events of September 11th left her stranded in Vancouver and she was unable to travel to Japan on time to compete. Missing the Japan Junior International must have been disappointing for Pattison, but she would soon get another chance to compete overseas at the Siska International in Slovakia, where she finished 12th in the junior women's all-around.

About two weeks after making her international debut, Pattison competed at the Elite Canada competition in Toronto, where she displayed many new skills en route to a second place finish in the all-around. She also won the gold medal on the event which is quickly becoming her best - the uneven bars. Here she showed world class swing and difficulty, including a difficult combination of elgrip giant-full, elgrip giant-half, Tkatchev, and a double front dismount from elgrip. Other top skills for Pattison included a 2 1/2 punch front, triple twist, and double pike on floor; a Yurchenko layout on vault; and a switch ring leap, switch leap to wolf jump 1/2 to Chen, and aerial walkover on beam.

Pattison could not attend the awards ceremony at Elite Canada to claim her uneven bars title, as she was off to the airport in order to travel to her next international event, the prestigious Canberra Cup international in Australia. There, she qualified for three event finals and finished 12th in the all-around.

Pattison's long term goal is to represent Canada at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In order to get there, she will need to follow the same advice she offers other aspiring gymnasts: "Train hard, think positive and don’t give up."
